    Abstract: Historians have generally agreed that American neutrality during the “French Wars” of the early 1800s was a boon for the country’s shipping industry. This article seeks to analyze the actions of these neutral American merchant-sailors from a global perspective. It illustrates how these merchants also had significant economic impacts in the regions that they operated in.
